The why and how of implementing a region map in your symptom checker

A region map allows our inference engine to learn the user’s most recent locations and identify any conditions related to those locations.

Implementing a region map is especially important for identifying region-related diseases, like malaria. Other benefits include:

  • Improved user experience: by allowing users to use a map to easily identify the places they’ve visited recently;
  • Higher accuracy on interview results: some regional risk factors, like tropical diseases, might drastically change an interview outcome;
  • Shorter and more efficient interviews: by providing additional information about the user from the beginning, a region map may help create shorter, more efficient interviews.

How to implement a region map?

Implementing a region map in a symptom checker is generally pretty  simple - it’s just a matter of matching our geographical risk factors with the maps (graphics) in the symptom checker.

Please refer to the list below when mapping the geographical risk factors to their respective countries:

Why do we only check the general regions?

The exact location is not necessary to calculate the disease probability. We use general regions as it’s sufficient for the purposes of the interview and protects the exact location of the user, increasing privacy.
